Residency training in pediatrics at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk, VA, is an integral part of the Department of Pediatrics of Eastern Virginia Medical School.

The Residency Training Program is designed to provide a broad educational experience in all aspects of pediatric medicine. Pediatric residents develop sound clinical judgment through personal responsibility for the care of healthy and sick children and through closely supervised educational and clinical experiences. During the three years of training at Children's Hospital, pediatric residents become proficient in the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic illness and gain experience in preventive pediatrics and health maintenance.

The fully accredited three-year program provides each resident the opportunity to develop expertise in general pediatric medicine as well as in-depth experience in numerous subspecialties. This is accomplished through three progressive levels of training which provide increasing complexity of clinical problems, increasing responsibility for patient care, and increasing availability of elective time.

Residency training takes place at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD), which is located in the Norfolk Medical Center Complex and is directly adjacent to Eastern Virginia Medical School. The hospital is the focus of all pediatric undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate training. The complex is also home to CHKD's Neuro-Developmental Center and Center for Pediatric Research, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine.

The pediatric faculty includes a full-time medical staff of pediatric sub-specialists and numerous community physicians, making it possible for residents to develop close working relationships with both generalists and specialists. Work in subspecialties prepares graduates to be consultants to other physicians as well as care providers for children with exceptional needs.

CHKD's residency program prepares graduates to face the challenges and complexities of their practice of pediatrics by fostering appropriate habits and attitudes of learning, by promoting the care of children in community-and hospital-based continuity care settings and by providing increased responsibility and independence in the clinical decision making process.
