Radiology/Imaging: Child-Friendly, Safe and Convenient
Even if it’s a simple chest X-ray, CHKD offers distinct advantages that are important to you and your child. With same-day scheduling, several walk-in options, and five radiology locations around the region, we’ve made convenience a priority for today’s busy families.
Once you’re here, you’ll find that we treat children with kid gloves, both physically and emotionally. Imaging equipment can be intimidating, so we take the time to make children comfortable and teach them about each step of a test. Gaining your child’s confidence makes the process easier for both of you.
Your child’s safety is also very important to us. For every test, we use the lowest possible radiation dose based on each child’s age and size. And we follow the Image Gently guidelines established in 2008 by the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging. Learn more about the Image Gently campaign and what parents should know here.

Children Need Pediatric Radiologists
All four of our radiologists are board-certified radiologists who hold certificates of added qualifications (CAQ) in pediatric radiology. You can be assured that one of them reads every single image, whether created at the main hospital or a CHKD Health Center.
Why is this important? Pediatric radiologists are specially trained to understand the unique needs of children, parents and pediatricians in the diagnostic process. Along with a degree from a medical school, pediatric radiologists have one year or more of clinical medicine training, four years of training in diagnostic radiology, and one or more additional years of training in the diagnosis of infants, children and adolescents using imaging equipment.
That extra training makes them uniquely qualified to read pediatric diagnostic images like X-rays, CT scans and MRIs. And all of our equipment, procedures and staff members are oriented to children’s special needs.
Our department is led by radiology director and radiation safety officer Dr. David Kushner, who trained at Harvard University, Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston and the National Institutes of Health. His expertise also includes teaching radiology at George Washington University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Susanne Grasso trained at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., the National Institutes of Health and Eastern Virginia Medical School. Along with serving children at CHKD, she is also an assistant professor of pediatrics and assistant professor in the radiology department at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Dr. Jennifer Rush trained at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan. In addition to her work with children at CHKD, she is an assistant professor in the radiology department of Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Dr. John Conery trained at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Before joining CHKD, he was a pediatric radiologist in the U.S. Navy at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth.

Physician’s Order for Diagnostic Procedures
All diagnostic/imaging radiology procedures require a physician’s order. Insurance companies may further require pre-approval of the procedure. In these cases, the ordering physician’s office will obtain an authorization from the insurance company before scheduling the procedure.
Radiology Physician Order Forms
Below are physician order form templates that can be individualized by the physician practice for ordering CHKDHS diagnostic imaging procedures.
