Vaccines are our best hope to end the COVID-19 pandemic, so each milestone of vaccinating different age groups of CHKD patients was exciting for our staff. CHKD Offers First Look at New Mental Health Hospital

Blog - 2021 Review - First Look Tour

CHKD shared with the public a first glimpse of an inpatient room, rooftop recreation area, and a therapeutic setting in its new mental health hospital slated to open in 2022. See coverage from WAVY-TV 10 here.

The centerpiece of CHKD’s mental health initiative is a new 14-story facility on Gresham Drive in Norfolk that will be the hub of a regional pediatric mental health program, with a continuum of care from early intervention to outpatient care to more intensive inpatient treatment. The facility will also be home to other medical services, including primary care pediatrics and sports medicine. The goal is to create a setting that normalizes mental health care within a matrix of treatment for everything from broken bones to broken spirits, and from immunizations to intensive therapy. CHKD Unveils New Mission Statement

About Us - Health Healing Hope

CHKD Health System unveiled its new mission statement: Health, Healing, and Hope for All Children. This mission statement defines our shared goals for our patients, the expectations we hold for ourselves, and the experience we pledge to provide for our patients, our families, and each other. Each carefully selected word in our mission represents a pillar of our care.

  • Health speaks to primary care, wellness, preventive care, and the state of being that we wish all children to attain.
  • Healing reflects the caring aspects of CHKD's work, encompassing our goal to keep children well and to restore them to good health through surgical and specialty care, diagnostics and treatment, and therapies and interventions.
  • Hope embraces the heart of how CHKD views children and is filled with our collective promise for the future. Tragic situations create heartbreak for families and caregivers but they also afford the opportunity to seize healing and hope from the darkest of moments.
  • For All Children demonstrates our commitment to care for every child who needs us, regardless of a family's ability to pay.

NICU Adds Reading Program

Blog - 2021 Review - NICU Reach Out and Read

Reading aloud is good for the brain and the heart, and even the tiniest babies in CHKD’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can now absorb those benefits, as CHKD became the first NICU in the state to launch a Reach Out and Read program. Besides encouraging brain and language development, reading aloud helps families bond with their babies, which is especially important when they begin life in a NICU. Our CHKD staff and volunteer “cuddlers” also are encouraged to read to the infants when the parents aren’t there to give babies meaningful auditory exposure. Read more.

CHKD Experiences High Levels of COVID-19 Hospitalizations and Positive Tests in September and December

More children were hospitalized at CHKD for illness related to COVID-19 in September and December than previous months of the pandemic. CHKD doctors, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers went into a full court press to treat both COVID-19, and a condition associated with COVID-19, multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). The pediatric intensive care unit and infectious disease and rheumatology specialists provided care for those with the most severe symptoms. Children ranged in age from infants to teens, so units across the hospital system also provided care. Staff in urgent care centers, the emergency department, and pediatric practices experienced a deluge of patients struggling with COVID-19 symptoms or in need of testing. There were more COVID-19 tests done in September and December than previous months of the pandemic and also more positive tests. See coverage from Channel 13 here.
