Did you know? CHKD’s Health Center and Urgent Care at Landstown is the first building in Virginia to meet LEED v4 requirements for new construction. LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a worldwide green building rating system that recognizes achievements in efficiency and sustainability.

Design of the 70,000-square-foot facility was built on CHKD’s guiding principle of advancing the health and well-being of its patients and visitors.

The design works to achieve this in many ways including day-lit staircases filled with artwork to encourage using the stairs; low-emitting building materials and furniture to improve indoor air quality; and low-allergy, climate-appropriate plants around the exterior to accommodate patients who visit the allergy clinic.

In addition, large windows in the main lobby and third floor waiting area allow an abundance of light and use displacement ventilation to save energy and keep the building at a comfortable temperature for patients, families and visitors.

The building design is expected to reduce energy costs by 35 percent, indoor water use by 37 percent and outdoor water use by 50 percent.

You’ll even find a kid-friendly, interactive dashboard in the main lobby that displays energy use, water use and other data in real time.
