As many children head back to school, it’s time for another fall ritual: getting a flu shot.
All children over the age of 6 months should get a flu shot each year, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Parents should aim to have their children vaccinated by the end of October so they will be protected in the upcoming months.
Although last year was a mild flu season, it’s important for everyone who’s eligible to receive a flu shot. Symptoms for the flu are very similar to COVID-19. Both can cause:
- Fever.
- Chills.
- Shortness of breath.
- Extreme fatigue.
- Muscle and body aches.
- Headache.
- Stuffy or runny nose.
- Vomiting or diarrhea.
While previous guidance was to wait 14 days between vaccinations, that is no longer the case, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Children ages 12 and up can receive a COVID-19 vaccine at the same they receive their flu shot.
Schedule your child’s flu shot with your pediatrician.
It might be convenient to visit a local pharmacy for your family’s flu shots, but there are many advantages to getting your child’s flu shot at their pediatrician’s office. Not only are your children more likely to feel comfortable in a familiar space, you’ll also be able to review your child’s medical record to make sure they’re up to date on all their other immunizations.
