COVID-19: Testing and Treatment for Children

Our pediatric practices, urgent cares, and emergency department are all receiving an extremely high volume of calls and visits from worried families.

We’d like to remind families that COVID-19 continues to be a mild illness in most children. However, it is an unpredictable disease and can be life-threatening in rare circumstances.

If your child is experiencing milder symptoms, such as a cough, fatigue, sore throat, or congestion, call your pediatrician’s office for advice. Since there are many viruses circulating now, assume your child is contagious until testing can be done, and isolate them at home from others to keep from spreading the virus.

While testing is important to guide isolation and quarantine, it's even more important for parents to pay close attention to their children’s symptoms, and to seek immediate medical attention if they are working hard to breathe, unable to speak, unable to life flat, or - in babies and toddlers - not eating or drinking. Other symptoms that may indicate a medical emergency include confusion or altered state of consciousness, inability to stay awake, or blue lips or skin.

See our guide below for additional information about when and where to get your child tested or visit our COVID-19 Resource section.
