Inpatient Mental Health Opening Preparations

In less than a month, CHKD will welcome patients and their families to our new mental health inpatient unit at Children's Pavilion. It's an exciting and important step for our health system as we finalize preparations to provide a new level of care for children with mental health concerns.

To help this opening proceed as smoothly as possible, we'll be sending our Children's Pavilion newsletters and updating this web page to provide you with timely reminders and answer frequently asked questions. 

Safety and Security - September 12 

Moving Tips

Please review the following health system policies to help ensure the safety of our workplace.

Policy SAF-16 covers electrical safety and offers clear guidance on the types of personal electrical items allowed in the building. 

Policy LS-05 covers storage requirements that must be followed at all times.


Employees who have a primary parking assignment at Children's Pavilion should park in the Children's Pavilion parking garage. At this time, staff can drive directly into the garage as the gates are not currently active.

If you need to drop something off, you may use the loop in front of the hospital for short-term parking as long as you can maintain sight of your car. Short-term parking is also available on P2 of the Children's Pavilion parking garage and the lot adjacent to the Medical Tower.

Access and Badging

Many employees will need a dual-authorization pin code to access the mental health floors. We anticipate issuing pin numbers the week of September 26. Thank you for your patience!

Employees who have trouble with their badge or trouble accessing a particular space should visit the security office located on the first floor of Children's Pavilion.

Food Delivery

If you are having food delivered, please make arrangements for the delivery driver to contact you when they arrive. Staff should pick up food deliveries outside of the lobby. 

Communications and Support - September 20

This week’s Children’s Pavilion newsletter update focuses on the communication systems and support that will be crucial to opening our new mental health inpatient facility to patients and their families on Tuesday, October 11.

Please refer to this information as needed to ensure you and your team have the correct systems in place that are essential to providing patient care.

IS Command Center

Information Services will be operating a command center beginning Tuesday, October 11, to provide any necessary support. Employees who have questions and concerns specific to information services, EMR support, applications, and hardware, should contact the IS Command Center by calling (757) 668-9962.

The IS Command Center will be active the following dates and times:

  • Tuesday, October 11 - Sunday, October 16
  • 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily

If you need to contact the command center outside of these hours, your call will be forwarded to our service desk team. Please note: the command center opening hours and dates may shift, if necessary, based on assessed needs.

Telephone, Computer Systems

Telephones and computers are in place and actively working. If you are unsure what telephone number is assigned to you, check the phone’s display. All phone numbers are displayed on each device.

Conference Room, Audiovisual Support

The conference room tables and chairs are arranged into two configurations: standard classroom or meeting room style. While you are welcome to adjust the configuration so that it fits your meeting needs, please remember that it is your responsibility to return all tables and chairs back to the standard classroom or meeting room style.

API Quick Badge Stations

Employees can find API Quick Badge stations located on each floor near the elevators.

Internal Communication - September 28 

In less than two weeks, we will open our new inpatient mental health facility at Children’s Pavilion. Based on the many questions that arise during department relocations and openings, we are focusing this week’s Children’s Pavilion Newsletter Update on issues that pertain to engineering and supply chain.

Please refer to this information as needed to ensure your office spaces have the correct equipment and supplies that are essential to your department’s operations.

Maintenance & Repair Requests

Please follow current hospital policy to submit any maintenance and repair requests by using the appropriate forms that can be accessed on KDnet. Use the “forms” link at the top of the KDnet homepage to find “engineering”, which links to the engineering work request form. Be sure to fill out the form completely, choosing Children’s Pavilion in the field that asks for the building’s name. You will also need to list your floor and location.

Signage & Space Modifications

While extensive planning and careful thought went into the design of each floor’s space, we understand that there may be unanticipated reasons to make modifications. CHKD staff are welcome to submit an engineering work request. All requests will be evaluated to determine if they align with engineering and facility, planning, and construction principles.

If additional signs are needed, department leadership can submit an engineering work request.

Please do not install or hang anything on the walls at this time. After 60 days have passed, staff members are welcome to submit an engineering work request.

Environmental Services

Trash will be picked up daily. Sharps containers should be moved to a utility room for soiled items within the department for pick up by EVS.

Inpatient areas will be cleaned during the first shift between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Most patient rooms will be cleaned between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

For the inpatient floors, linens will be stored in the clean holding room on each floor and distributed for patient care by the nursing staff. It will be restocked daily and as needed.

Who's Hungry?

Employees will receive a discount when they purchase food from the Children’s Pavilion café. Please be aware that café hours will be expanding during October. Online ordering begins mid-October.

September schedule:

6:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. (Monday through Friday)

Schedule effective Monday, October 3:

6:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Monday through Friday)

Schedule effective October 10:

6:30 a.m. – 10 p.m. (Seven days a week)

Please note: Children’s Pavilion café will be closed Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1 due to events occurring inside the building.

Shred-It Bins

Please keep an eye out for Shred-It bins. They will be deployed the week before go-live at the the latest.

Mail Room

Deliveries will be sent to the Children’s Pavilion mail room, which will operate exactly like the mailroom at the main hospital. There will be “Post Office” type boxes for each department and a drop box for outbound mail. Mail pickup and delivery will be self-service.

Oxygen Tanks

If you ordered oxygen cylinders, these will be kept in a storage room on the first floor. Department staff members will be responsible for moving empty tanks from their department to the first-floor storage room and obtaining full replacement tanks. Supply Chain will be responsible for ensuring tanks are ordered and replenished in the first-floor storage area.

Equipment and Supplies

The supply chain team anticipates all equipment will be delivered in time for inpatient opening. If any delays are expected, purchasing will notify key stakeholders providing up-to-date information and determine whether the delay affects operations.

Once Biomed has completed their inspections, inpatient equipment will be tagged with a CHKD asset number and, if applicable, a PM sticker.

This week, the supply chain team began working with individual departments to deliver supplies that have been requested and to stock the periodic automatic replenishment (PAR) locations. Departments will be responsible for stocking individual treatment areas and secondary supply locations outside of their supply closets.
