CHKD Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program is a 12-month program designed to develop outstanding clinicians by providing expert level care to the pediatric and adolescent sports population of Hampton Roads. The residency program allows opportunities for the resident to combine didactic curriculum and physician observations with hands-on clinical mentorship in order to enhance clinical decision making.

*Our residency program is a developing program currently seeking initial accreditation candidacy from the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE)

Mission

The mission of Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program is to immerse practicing clinicians into advanced didactic curriculum and clinical mentorship in order to develop sports physical therapists that will deliver excellence in quality care, lead and educate the profession, public and health care community, and excel as members of the sports medicine team.

Goals 

  • Support the vision and mission of CHKD by developing advanced practitioners of sports physical therapy who provide expert care to the pediatric and adolescent sports population.
  • Provide training to and opportunities for residents to synthesize didactic education and mentorship into patient centered care that emphasizes ethical and evidence-based clinical practice.
  • Develop clinicians who will be leaders in the field of sports physical therapy and teach others in the general public, health care community and physical therapy profession.
  • Develop clinicians that have advanced sports physical therapy proficiency and expertise in preparation to pass the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) Sports Clinical Specialist (SCS) examination in order to achieve board certification status.
  • Provide residents with opportunities for athletic venue coverage in order to develop clinicians that will serve the athletic needs of the community.

Program Benefits 

Residents will be employed by CHKD and considered a full time employee eligible for benefits and three-quarters starting PT salary. Residents will also receive additional continuing education benefits in order to prepare them for the board-certification exam. In addition, the resident will have unique opportunities for:

How to Apply

Applications requirements

  • Hold (or be eligible to hold) full PT license in the state of Virginia
    • Applicants must be licensed prior to the start of the residency
    • Temporary licensure is not permitted
  • Hold at least one of the following:
    • Current athletic trainer certification and licensure (ATC)
    • Current license as an emergency medical technician (EMT)
    • Current emergency response for the athlete (ERA) course certification (must be completed prior to beginning on field coverage)
  • Hold current BLS/CPR certification

Application Process

  • Applicants will apply through RF-PTCAS
  • Applications are due April 30th of the application year
  • Interviews: April/May
  • Selected candidates will be notified of acceptance by May 31st of the application year for a on or about July 1st start date

Program Outcomes

CHKD Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program outcomes including graduation rate, employment rate, and clinical-specialist board examination pass rate will be published as they become available.
