During her training at UNC, McVea was a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) fellow at the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities. She completed her predoctoral internship in pediatric neuropsychology, during which she also conducted preschool evaluations and comprehensive diagnostic assessments of individuals suspected of having ASD.

Most recently, she was a postdoctoral trainee at Duke University's Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development, where she worked as part of a research team exploring the efficacy of umbilical cord blood for improving outcomes of children with autism.
