Bio
Dr. Peterson completed her undergraduate education at the University of Maryland where she was a Division I swimmer. She earned her master’s degree from Boston University and attended medical school at Midwestern University in Arizona. She completed her residency at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, and a fellowship in her hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
After her fellowship, Dr. Peterson worked at the University of Utah where she helped build its pediatric kidney transplant program.
Dr. Peterson is passionate about partnering with patients with kidney disease and their caregivers to achieve health, longevity, and quality of life equivalent to the general population. Her areas of expertise include kidney transplant, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and the transition from adolescent to adult healthcare. In addition, she has specialized training in quality improvement. She has participated in collaboratives with other organizations such as the United Network for Organ Sharing to advocate for children with kidney disease.
Dr. Peterson is excited to be back on the east coast to continue her career and care for the children and families in the Hampton Roads area. She and her husband have two boys and enjoy spending time with them outdoors, swimming. Dr. Peterson also enjoys ceramics, painting, and photography.
