Bio

Dr. David A. Bitonti, CAPT (Ret), DC, USN received his BA in Chemistry from Saint Vincent College, Latrobe, PA, and DMD degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, Pittsburgh. He completed Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency training as an active duty Navy sponsored resident at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. After completion of his dental school training, Dr. Bitonti was commissioned in the United States Navy Dental Corps as a Lieutenant.

He has had a number of duty stations including three tours aboard ships, two of which were aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise CVN-65. Following residency and his second tour aboard ENTERPRISE, he joined the full-time faculty and served as the Associate Program Director, National Capital Consortium (NCC) Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC), Bethesda, MD. His next assignment was as Associate Professor and Chairman, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Naval Postgraduate Dental School (NPDS), National Naval Dental Center, Bethesda, MD. Following his tour at NPDS, CAPT Bitonti was named the Head, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Hospital Dentistry, NNMC, Bethesda, MD and rejoined the full-time faculty of the NCC Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency. Follow on assignments have included Director for Surgical Services (Chief of Surgery); Deputy Commander for Integration and Transition, and Chief of Staff for Integration and Transition, NNMC, Bethesda, MD; and Chief of Staff for Integration and Transition, and Senior Military Advisor to the Commander, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), Bethesda, MD; and Commanding Officer, Naval Support Activity Bethesda, Bethesda, MD. Dr. Bitonti is a Clinical Associate Professor in Surgery, Department of Surgery, F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He retired following 30 years of active duty Navy service, and spent two years in private practice in Ijamsville, Maryland. Following his time in private practice, Dr. Bitonti joined the staff at the Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) as the Dental Service Chief and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. Following his time at the Hampton VAMC, Dr. Bitonti subsequently retired from the Veterans Affairs Health Administration.

Dr. Bitonti practices the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery, is as a Past President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Fellow of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Fellow of the American College of Dentists, Fellow of the International College of Dentists, Fellow of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, Diplomate of the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology, and a member of the AOCMF Maxillofacial Faculty, in addition to other organizations and committee appointments. Dr. Bitonti has a special interest in the management and surgical treatment of trauma and obstructive sleep apnea.
