Where to Start and What to Expect
If your child is in need of mental health treatment, please contact your child’s pediatrician and request a referral to CHKD’s mental health program. Currently, we are offering outpatient mental health services at five locations throughout Hampton Roads. See map below.
Both telehealth and in-person visits are available. If your child’s pediatrician has submitted a referral, you’ll be notified by phone to schedule an assessment. To expedite the process,
consider completing this form which allows our office to contact you via text or email to provide updates. Once you complete the form, please return it to us by fax or email. Fax: (757) 668-8870 or email a scanned copy to
MentalHealth@CHKD.org.
Once the referral is received, our schedulers will reach out to you to schedule a clinical needs assessment (CNA) with one of our clinical team members. This assessment will help us determine your child’s next step in treatment.
Once complete, our clinical team will work with you to define the next steps in your child’s care. Many children will be offered a six-week skills-based therapy group where they will begin to learn the skills necessary to navigate their symptoms.
After successful completion of this group, if additional treatment is necessary, your child will move to the next step in treatment when possible. Families who choose not to participate in the therapy group will remain on our waitlist until a new patient intake appointment is available for individual services.
We recognize that your child’s mental health is critical to their overall health. Please know that we are doing our best to provide access to care as quickly as possible. The need is significant, and we are working hard to bring on new providers to improve access and reduce waiting. If at any point during this process, you become more concerned and believe that your child needs a more immediate evaluation, CHKD’s emergency department offers evaluation by a mental health therapist around-the-clock. If your child is in immediate danger, please call 911.
For questions related to your referral, please contact (757) 668-HOPE (4673). You may also send us an email at MentalHealth@CHKD.org.
