Bio

Anninos played baseball on a Division I team at St. John’s University, which led to a passion for working with “overhead athletes” – those who use their upper arms and shoulders to play sports like baseball, volleyball, tennis, and track and field throwing events.

He has been with CHKD since 2011, and started the first sports medicine physical therapy program at CHKD and is a leader in this area for overhead athlete treatment. Anninos is a team physical therapist for Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University, and several other local Hampton Roads colleges, high schools, and travel ball programs. He specializes in rehabilitation to return athletes to the field, and also in management techniques geared toward preventing future injuries. Through his Prevent Injuries to Compete Healthy (PITCH) performance program, Anninos provides many services and programs to safely enhance performance, while preventing injuries. His expertise in pitching biomechanics allows him to work directly with players and their pitching coaches to develop a team approach to return and keep players on the field.

Anninos also has a passion for teaching and mentoring future physical therapists. He is an adjunct faculty member for Old Dominion University’s physical therapy program in the School of Rehabilitation Sciences and regularly lectures for the ODU athletic training program and local physical therapy assistant programs.

Anninos is a board member for the Virginia Shoulder & Sports Medicine Research Foundation, specializing in research for improving outcomes in sports medicine geared to the upper extremity.

When he is not working, Anninos travels the country to play competitive slow-pitch softball.
