The Safety of Our Care

At CHKD, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our patients and their families. That’s why we are doing everything we can to make it safer and easier to get the care your child needs, from the CHKD doctors you trust.

Face Covering Icon

Even though we have made progress in the battle against COVID-19, the CDC and Virginia Department of Health still require that everyone wear a mask inside healthcare facilities. That includes all CHKD Health System locations, including our health centers and physician practices. As always, children under the age of 2 and those who cannot wear a mask safely are exempt.

Social Distancing Icon

We are limiting the number of people in our facilities and physical distancing precautions are being taken in all locations.

We are following strict guidelines for disinfecting equipment and surfaces.

Important Information For Our Patients and Families

Visitor Guidelines - Updated January 12

Visitor restrictions as of Wednesday, January 12

To help keep our patients and team members safe, we are diligently working to reduce the risk of potential exposure to COVID-19 and other contagious illnesses. These efforts include limits on the number of visitors.

Doctor’s appointments and other outpatient visits: Two visitors may accompany a patient. When necessary, one of the two may be the patient's sibling.

Urgent Care visits: One parent/guardian may accompany their child to any of our locations.

Inpatient/Outpatient Surgery at the main hospital or at a CHKD surgery center: Two adults may visit during your child’s surgery.

Hospitalized Patients: Children may have two designated adult visitors for the duration of their stay. They must be parents or caregivers. No siblings or others are allowed. Two visitors may be at a patient’s bedside at a time. Medical assistants who help with activities of daily living are always allowed.

Hospitalized patients with a positive COVID-19 test and persons exposed to or under investigation for COVID-19: These patients may have two designated visitors (parents or caregivers) for the duration of their stay, but only one visitor is allowed to be in the hospital at a time. The two designated visitors can swap out once in every 24-hour cycle. Parents in this category will receive additional visitation limits from their child’s care team.

Visitors to all CHKD facilities are required to wear a mask over their nose and mouth at all times, including inside patient rooms (except when sleeping).

Masks Required at All CHKD Facilities

  • Regardless of vaccination status, anyone entering a CHKD location is required to wear a face covering. Children who are under age 2 or who are not developmentally or medically able to wear a mask or face covering safely are exempt. There are very few conditions that prevent a child from wearing a mask safely.
  • All adults are required to wear masks inside CHKD facilities.
  • Please be sure to wear your mask/face covering so that it covers your mouth and nose at all times.
  • To protect our patients, their families, and our staff from COVID-19, we're asking people not to use face masks with small plastic valves in the front panel.
