The Safety of Our Care

At CHKD, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our patients and their families. That’s why we are doing everything we can to make it safer and easier to get the care your child needs, from the CHKD doctors you trust.

Face Covering Icon

Even though we have made progress in the battle against COVID-19, the CDC and Virginia Department of Health still require that everyone wear a mask inside healthcare facilities. That includes all CHKD Health System locations, including our health centers and physician practices. As always, children under the age of 2 and those who cannot wear a mask safely are exempt.

Social Distancing Icon

We are limiting the number of people in our facilities and physical distancing precautions are being taken in all locations.

Disinfecting Icon

We are following strict guidelines for disinfecting equipment and surfaces.

Please help us provide the best care to your child and prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community. If you or your child has symptoms or has been exposed, please make sure you talk to someone in your doctor’s office before your appointment. We may need to give you special instructions for your arrival.

Important Information For Our Patients and Families

New Visitor Guidelines

  • For doctor's visits or other outpatient appointments, a patient may have two visitors accompany them. When necessary, one of the two may be the patient's sibling.

  • Urgent Care Centers, just one parent/guardian may accompany their child to any of our locations.

  • For inpatient and outpatient surgery, at the main hospital or at a CHKD surgery center, two adults may accompany a patient on the day of surgery.

  • Hospitalized patients may have four designated adult visitors for the duration of their stay. Only two of these visitors may be at the bedside at any given time. Unfortunately, we are currently unable to accommodate sibling visits.

  • Hospitalized patients with a positive COVID-19 test, and patients under investigation for COVID-19, may have up to two parents, legal guardians, or dedicated caregivers on their visitor list. Only one adult may be at the bedside at any given time.

    Visitors may not:

    • Please help keep our patients safe by not visiting if you are sick or have a fever.
    • Do not visit with any other hospitalized patients or famiies.

Face masks are required at all times during your visit. Your mask must cover your mouth and nose. Children under age 2, and those who are not developmentally able to wear a mask safely, are exempt. Masks with valves are not allowed.

Masks Required at All CHKD Facilities

    • Regardless of vaccination status, anyone entering a CHKD location is required to wear a face covering. Children who are under age 2 or who are not developmentally or medically able to wear a mask or face covering safely are exempt. There are very few conditions that prevent a child from wearing a mask safely.
    • All adults are required to wear masks inside CHKD facilities.
    • Please be sure to wear your mask/face covering so that it covers your mouth and nose at all times.
    • To protect our patients, their families, and our staff from COVID-19, we're asking people not to use face masks with small plastic valves in the front panel.

    COVID Testing at CHKD

Can my child get a COVID-19 test at a CHKD facility?

Yes, if a CHKD provider determines that your child needs a test based on his or her symptoms and exposure history, that provider can collect the specimen during a patient visit to one of our pediatric practices, urgent care centers or emergency department at the main hospital. Click here for detailed information about COVID-19 testing at CHKD.

    COVID-19 Vaccinations

Many CHKD practices now offer COVID-19 vaccinations to patients ages 5 and older. To schedule an appointment, please call your pediatrician. More information about COVID-19 vaccinations at CHKD can be found here.
