Please read the following instructions concerning the proper care and wearing schedule for the custom splint that has been made for your child. If you have questions about how to apply the splint, it’s fit, or your child’s general comfort wearing the splint, please contact the scheduler at 668-6612.

For instructions about taking care of the splint, please refer to the Cascade manufacturer’s warranty.

Build up the wearing time gradually.

  1. Start by wearing it for one hour – check for skin redness or irritation
  2. If there is no irritation, put the splint on again and wear for two hours
  3. If there is no irritation, put the splint on again and wear it for four hours
  4. When your child can wear the splint for four hours comfortably, use the splint schedule below.

When to wear your splint:

( ) Night only/naptime only

( ) Night and day all of the time, except to be removed for exercise and hygiene

( ) Daytime only

( ) During weight bearing activities

( ) _____ hours on, _____ hours off

  1. Keep your splint away from open flames because it will burn.
  2. This material is not toxic; however please discourage your child and pets from chewing on the splint. Chewing will cause nicks in the splint causing red areas on your child’s skin.
  3. A molded instep pad is provided with your DAFO (dynamic ankle foot orthosis) to be worn under the front edge. The pad is important to protect against pinching, and to keep the foot snug in the brace. The size of your DAFO is planned with this instep pad in place.
  4. All the straps serve a specific purpose. For best results, fasten each one snugly.
  5. Splints should not be worn on hard surfaces or out of doors without shoes. Scoring or heavy scratching, especially on the bottom, may lead to stress fractures in the plastic. A SHOE MUST BE WORN OVER THE SPLINT, (EXCEPT DURING THERAPY TIME) FOR THE WARRANTY TO REMAIN VALID.
  6. In cold temperatures, your DAFO may become brittle and more prone to stress fractures. Be careful not to suddenly pry the splint open when it is very cold.

Adjustments need to be made if any of the following occur:

  • Excessive swelling
  • Severe pain
  • Skin rash
  • Pressure areas (red spots that do not go away in 15-20 minutes, or irritation resembling the start of a blister)
  • Broken or missing parts to the DAFO
  • Excessive stiffness of the brace
  • Cracks in the plastic

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s splint, please call us. It is not unusual for custom splints to need adjustments. We are available to assist you. Please call our scheduler at 668-6612 to schedule a follow-up appointment if you feel your splint needs adjustments or if you have concerns.
