CHKD Welcomes New Mental Health Providers

NORFOLK, Va. – CHKD is pleased to welcome new psychiatrists and psychologists to our mental health program, in our continuing effort to grow services to meet the needs of children in crisis. These mental health experts are part of a bold new initiative that also includes a $224 million mental health hospital currently under construction.

Dr. Carl Petersen joins CHKD as chief of psychiatry and mental health services. Dr. Petersen is dual board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in general and child and adolescent psychiatry. A retired U.S. Navy captain, Dr. Petersen brings a wealth of experience overseeing mental health initiatives and programs. He spent the last 10 years of his military career at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, serving the last three as its director of mental health. Dr. Petersen led efforts to improve access to care for children with behavioral difficulties and created a program to help pediatric residents properly diagnose and treat children with psychiatric illnesses.

Dr. Jana Elliker is a psychiatrist who grew up in Hampton Roads and received her medical training at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Va. She did her residency at the University of Maryland, and then completed a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the same university.

Dr. Kevin Johnson received his medical training at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa. He completed his residency in psychiatry and fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine in Tulsa.  Dr. Johnson is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in general psychiatry and board eligible in child and adolescent psychiatry. 

Lana Mahgoub is a licensed clinical psychologist who received her doctorate degree in psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She completed a fellowship at Boys Town Center for Behavioral Health in Omaha, Nebraska. Her experience includes work as a school psychologist and in private counseling practices.

Pamela Murillo was raised in New York City, and received her doctorate in psychology at the University of Rhode Island. As a licensed clinical psychologist, she uses various forms of behavioral therapy, along with mindfulness practices to help children, adolescents, and their families thrive and grow.
