Back-to-School Success

Oh, the rhythms of life. The school year begins, the school year ends. The summer begins, the summer ends. As the summer months slip away and we prepare for another school year, here are a few tips for a successful transition:

  • Give your child information. Be enthusiastic. What is the schedule going to be like? What school will they go to and who will their teacher be?
  • Notice your child’s words and behavior as he explores his feelings about going back to school. Your child may feel worried and excited about what’s to come, sad about the summer ending or mad that he didn’t get the teacher he wanted. Whatever your child is feeling, be attentive and reassuring.
  • Give your child tasks to do to prepare for the school year like trying on school clothes to see what still fits, setting up a space to do homework or making a list of healthy after-school snacks.
  • Make plans for a few more fun, family summer activities and put them on the calendar. It’s not over yet!
  • Adjust your child’s bedtime schedule and have him start getting up at the time he will need to during the school year.
  • If your child is particularly anxious, do a practice run of the morning routine and visit the school for a tour.
  • If your child is new to the school, arrange for him to meet a classmate prior to the first day.
  • Teach your child some calming techniques to use if he feels overwhelmed, such as taking a deep breath and/or thinking a happy thought.
  • Put a note in your child’s backpack or lunch bag to remind him that you’re thinking of him.

Parents have homework, too. Make sure your child’s pediatrician well-checkups and immunizations are up to date. Check the school’s website for information on this year’s calendar and supplies, and call the school early with any concerns so there is time to ask questions and work together to help your child have a healthy, successful year.

Remember you can set the tone for a calm, organized and relaxed first day. Don’t forget to breathe.
