Dr. Kelly Maples was recently reappointed as vice chair of the Dermatology Committee of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. As vice chair, Dr. Maples’ duties include the development of programs which educate specialists, primary care providers and patients on the correct diagnosis and management of allergic skin conditions such as hives, eczema and contact dermatitis.

“It's easy for many people to think of chronic skin rashes as no big deal, but these conditions can really impact the quality of life of the patient and her family,” says Dr. Maples “Skin-care regimens for kids with atopic dermatitis (the most common type of eczema) can be like a part-time job for families.

“The presence of allergic skin conditions also leads to concern for and over-diagnosis of food allergies.  While my committee provides education on many aspects of allergic skin disease, my goal as a part of the leadership of the ACAAI Dermatology Committee is to educate both patients and providers on when food allergy testing is and is not indicated in kids with eczema to help prevent the over-diagnosis of food allergy in our community.”

Dr. Maples’ position on the committee has allowed her to interact with national and international experts of allergic skin conditions and food allergy. She brings what she learns back to the CHKD community.

“I was recently asked to join a special ACAAI task force to develop a shared decision-making tool for patients and families of patients with atopic dermatitis,” says Dr. Maples. “This online tool, which will be available this summer, will help families make informed decisions about treating their children's eczema.  Working with the other physicians on this task force not only provided me with the opportunity to learn from their experiences but it also allowed me to promote CHKD's experience with and services for patients with atopic dermatitis.”
