Tips for Being a Nurturing Parent

By Dr. Peter Grosso, Nansemond Pediatrics

Creating a loving, nurturing relationship with your child requires a lot of time and energy, but the rewards are well worth it and will last a lifetime. Here are 8 simple steps to get started:

Love unconditionally. Make sure your child knows that you love him, even when he misbehaves.

Give praise. Praise and encourage your child often, especially when she is exploring new skills, expressing her curiosity or exhibiting positive behaviors.

Spend time: Take time each day to spend with your child. This bond helps him feel secure. Children spell love T-I-M-E.

Listen. The best way to understand what your child needs is to be a good listener.

Be a role model. Your child will learn from watching you. Reactions and emotions are contagious; so always try to model the traits you wish to see in your child.

Develop routines. Consistent daily routines provide comfort by helping your child know what to expect, and what is expected of her. Set boundaries for appropriate behavior. Teach your child right from wrong and a respect for authority. This is crucial for your child to be a productive member of society.

Protect your child from stress. Repeated exposure to stress, violence or conflict can have negative effects on the brain development of a child.

Take care of yourself. Knowing your own limits and taking care of yourself is vital to being a nurturing parent. When you take time to recharge your own batteries, you're able to be more patient and responsive to your child.

Remember, as a parent, you are your child’s first teacher. There is no substitute for the impact you will have on her life. A nurturing home environment has been shown to enhance brain development and provide a sense of security that helps children grow into confident and loving people.
