The Student Nurse Externship Program at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) allows the undergraduate nursing student to explore the rewarding field of pediatric nursing. The CHKD Student Nurse Externship is a paid 10-week program beginning in mid- May and ending late July. The program is open to BSN nursing students who are within one year of graduation, are in good academic standing, and have completed at least 2 semesters of clinical rotations.

Through a combination of didactic, simulation, and clinical experiences, CHKD will support the Student Nurse Extern in developing skills critical for the role of professional nurse. The nurse extern utilizes the nursing process to assist the RN in performing direct and indirect nursing care. At CHKD you will learn how to focus on patient safety, care delivery, quality patient outcomes, communication, and expand your knowledge in the professional nurse’s role as a member of an interdisciplinary team.

Key Program Benefits:

  • Opportunities for paid observational experiences with other units/specialties
  • Didactic & simulation sessions focused on building a foundation for professional nursing practice
  • A combination of 8- or 12-hour shifts, with day-night rotation and occasional weekend shifts
