What's New at CHKD?
The King's Daughters Milk Bank
The King’s Daughters Milk Bank at CHKD is a nonprofit, hospital-based donor milk bank with a mission to provide pasteurized donor human milk from carefully screened donors to premature and sick infants, improving their potential to survive and thrive. Our donor milk bank is the only one of its kind in Virginia and one of only 31 in the nation. It serves more than 50 hospital units from New Jersey to Florida.
Accredited and operating under the guidelines of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA), The King’s Daughters Milk Bank carefully screens altruistic donors, pasteurizes pooled donations, and performs microbiological testing to ensure that the final treatments are safe and suitable for our nation’s most fragile infants.
The Milk Bank depends upon women who are willing to undergo the screening process and donate their extra milk to other babies. "Each woman's lactation period is different, but no one continues indefinitely. There is always an end point, so we are always in search of new donors," says Milk Bank director Ashlynn Baker, RN. "Right now, we are facing a critical shortage of donors and donor milk, so we're asking area physicians to help us distribute information to breastfeeding mothers about our need."
The Milk Bank has
