Bio
Dr. Smith is the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at CHKD, part of the CHKD/UVA regional collaborative for cardiac care.
Prior to his arrival at CHKD, Dr. Smith was the Clinical
Director of the Heart Center and Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Akron Children's Hospital in Ohio from 2001 to 2016. While at Akron, he developed, implemented and executed an organizational blueprint for an integrated pediatric and congenital cardiovascular medicine and surgery program. He also spearheaded a collaborative affiliation agreement between Akron Children's Hospital and MetroHealth Medical Center to provide pediatric surgical and medical subspecialty services.
From 1998 to 2001, he was Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Rainbow Babies and
Children’s Hospital in Cleveland.
Dr. Smith is board certified in thoracic surgery and
congenital cardiac subspecialty surgery. He graduated from the University of
Minnesota Medical School and completed post graduate training at Washington
University School of Medicine in St. Louis, the University of Minnesota and
Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
Dr. Smith moved with his family to Norfolk and is excited to
be part of the CHKD community.
