Dr. Mackey's desire to be a surgeon began when she was 5. Along her educational journey, she decided on neurological surgery while at the University of Chicago.

She has a particular interest in international surgery and the advancement of pediatric neurosurgery in the developing world, having worked in Kenya, Uganda, South and Southeast Asia.

Dr. Mackey is most passionate about pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors, and spent years during her training in a neurooncology basic science laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She sought a fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to further pursue her clinical interest in this field.

Dr. Mackey joined CHKD having come from the University of New Mexico, where she served as both an adult and pediatric neurosurgeon, being the first-ever fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeon in the state as well as the only practicing pediatric neurosurgeon while there.

Her husband is an Air Force pilot, and the military has brought her family to the area. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and their son.
