Bio

Russell, CHKD's Clinical Care Supervisor, utilizes evidence-based treatments to address trauma symptoms, problem behaviors, and other mental health concerns in children and adolescents. She is certified in trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) and in parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT).

Russell is a Within Agency Trainer for PCIT, which allows her to train other therapists at CHKD in the PCIT model. She is also trained in child and family traumatic stress intervention (CFTSI) and in Alternatives for Families: a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT). Further, Russell is trained in child and adult relationship enhancement (CARE) and provides CARE trainings for CHKD staff. Lastly, Russell trained at the Beck Institute in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Russell has worked in the community with children since 2005 and has been providing therapy to children since 2009. Russell became a licensed clinical social worker in 2013 and started her LCSW career as a clinician at CHKD’s Child Advocacy Center in 2013. In that position, she worked completely and totally in the areas of child maltreatment and trauma. She joined the CHKD Mental Health Program in 2018. In addition, Russell is an instructor at EVMS Department of Pediatrics, Division of Psychiatry and Psychology.

In 2007, Russell volunteered as a social worker in Accra, Ghana, West Africa, and then again in 2010 in Maputo, Mozambique, East Africa. She has provided numerous trainings in the Hampton Roads and surrounding communities on the topic of trauma.

Outside of work, Russell enjoys spending time with her husband, family, friends, and Siberian husky, traveling, and participating in dance fitness classes.
