Avoid Those Last-minute Crises

Procrastination – putting off doing something for as long as possible – is a common syndrome. But for students and parents everywhere, it’s a source of frustration, conflict, stress and even panic. And, of course, less-then-ideal grades.

But it doesn’t have to be that way! Here are some tips that you can help your child incorporate into his or her homework routine that can really make a difference:

  • Make a to-do list (create a detailed timeline with deadlines included)
  • Break down each task into smaller steps
  • Tell people about the tasks you want to complete – if shared, you’ll tend to hold yourself more accountable
  • Consider changing things up by studying in different places (library, school, desk at home, outside on your patio, etc.)
  • Reward yourself when you complete a task
  • Decide on a consequence for yourself if you do not complete your tasks
  • Eliminate all distractions – turn off the TV, put down your cell phone
  • Get organized
  • Finish one task before starting another
  • Visualize your success and how great it will feel to complete your homework or project!
