Nasoendoscopy is a diagnostic test that allows the doctor and speech pathologist to examine the movement of the soft palate and assess the velum (in the back of the throat) during speech. Some children can experience problems with the quality of their voice and can sound hyper nasal or hypo nasal. These types are problems can be caused by a problem with the soft palate movement and closure pattern for speech. Sometimes this is a learned problem that can be treated with speech therapy and sometimes it is a structural problem that requires surgery.

A nasoendoscopy is a simple test that is done while the child is awake and talking. The speech pathologist and the surgeon work together to examine the soft palate in action as the child repeats sounds and words. The test helps to determine why the speech sounds nasal and what needs to be done to help the child improve his or her resonance.

Children do best with little talk about the test. Please tell your child that he/she is coming to see the doctor and speech pathologist to get a better look in their throat. A child with too much information may become anxious before they arrive making it hard to do the test. We will explain the procedure to them once we are ready to begin.

For children and teenagers, an ointment or spray will be used to numb the nose and back of the throat. The spray will feel cold and may burn or leave a funny taste. The doctor will insert the tube with a tiny camera into the nose and the speech pathologist will have the child repeat certain words and phrases. The process only takes 5 minutes A large TV screen allows the parents and child to observe the movement of the palate during the speech test .The test is recorded and kept should it be needed for further use. The findings are reviewed with the parents and patient at the end of the test. The doctor and speech pathologist can determine if the problem can be fixed with speech therapy or the problem requires surgical intervention and speech therapy.

If your child has a cold, he or she should not have the test done. Please call the Craniofacial Center at 757-668-7031 or 757-668-6700.
