Safe Patient Handling Equipment at CHKD

(757) 668-7000

We want to make your child’s stay as safe and comfortable as possible.

Patients who weigh more than 35 pounds and are not able to safely move or transfer on their own will need to be moved using safe patient handling equipment.

We use safe patient handling equipment for:

  • patients that are not fully alert because of medication or illness
  • patients that need physical assistance
  • patients who cannot follow directions

These are some examples of safe patient handling equipment:

  • Mechanical lifts with slings – these may be on a portable stand or may be used with a track in the ceiling
  • Lifts that assist with standing
  • Mechanical transfer aids
  • Gait belts with handles to assist patients while walking
  • Sliding transfer boards

Using safety lifts and other safety devices protects patients and also prevents injury to family members, visitors and our staff.

We will encourage your child to become more independent if this is safe and practical at a later date. Your child’s physician may ask a physical therapist to work with your child if this could help with recovery.

Please help us by supporting our efforts for patient safety. Your nurse will give you more information about the type of safety equipment that we will use for your child. We sincerely appreciate your cooperation. Please feel free to ask questions!
