Go Green With Us

Green is the designated color for mental health awareness, and CHKD will shine a green light on its buildings across Hampton Roads. Join us by lighting your office building, front porch, or classroom green. Organize a day at work or school for everyone to wear green.

Start A Fundraiser

Businesses are invited to host a special fundraising campaign to benefit CHKD’s mental health initiative. Individuals can raise money too by using Team CHKD to create their own event. Visit www.TeamCHKD.org/lighttheway to find out how.


Mental Health Awareness Month Kickoff

11:30 a.m., Town Center Square, Virginia Beach

National Alliance on Mental Illness Coastal Virginia will host a kickoff event by the fountain at Town Center Square. Local elected officials will speak about changes in mental health legislation .


Take A Class: Positive Discipline

Wednesday, May 1

6:30 p.m., CHKD Health & Surgery Center at Oyster Point, Newport News

Learn positive discipline techniques to support your child’s mental well-being. Register online for this free, two-hour workshop, at CHKD Health & Surgery Center at Oyster Point in Newport News.


It's Movie Night: Watch "Angst"

Thursday, May 2

6:30 p.m., Cape Henry Collegiate, Virginia Beach

Watch a special showing of “Angst” – a documentary about anxiety – followed by a panel discussion. Register to attend this two-hour event in the Dreyfus Family Auditorium at Cape Henry Collegiate, 1320 Mill Dam Road, Virginia Beach. Appropriate for kids ages 10 and older. This documentary is presented in partnership with the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation.


Get Moving: Run, Roll, or Stroll

Break The Stigma: Take The Pledge

It’s National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. Today, everyone can take a pledge – created by the National Alliance on Mental Health – to end the stigma of mental illness, which deters people from seeking help. One-in-five children ages 13 to 18 have, or will have, a serious mental illness.

Attend A Mental Health Forum

The Hampton Roads Community Foundation will host a forum on mental health with guest speaker Dr. Gregory Fritz, a child and adolescent psychiatrist and past president of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The forum will be held in partnership with CHKD.  Register here.


"Changing the Game" Fundraiser

Many high-profile athletes have publicly discussed their personal struggles with mental health. At this panel discussion, hear firsthand stories and learn what’s being done within sports organizations and on the legislative front to improve mental health awareness and education. The nonprofit is dedicated to reduce the loss and suffering from teen and young adult depression, suicide, and suicidal behavior through educational programs and community partnerships.
