Opportunities for Parents as Leaders on the CHKD NICU Family Advisory Council

The CHKD NICU is recruiting family leaders to serve as partners with staff in guiding our work in the unit as members of our Family Advisory Council.

What is a Family Advisory Council (FAC)?

Over the years, the NICU FAC’s accomplishments included the creation of the NICU Wall of Fame, New Parent Survival Kits, Graduation Caps for NICU grads, planning the NICU Reunion, input on the NICU Renovation, and much more. In the past, members of the Council spoke at our NICU support groups and Resident Grand Rounds, volunteered in the NICU regularly, and helped with other projects. Many were part of the Peer Support List, which offered support to current families with similar medical situations. The NICU FAC historically has been a dynamic group, full of ideas and enthusiasm, which we hope to build upon!

Requirements for Family Leaders

Any parent or guardian who has had a child in the NICU is eligible. Family members do not need any specific experience or background to serve as a leader, but they should have the following qualities:

• Able to communicate and work with families and staff whose backgrounds, experiences, and lifestyles may be very different from their own.
• A positive approach and ability to share and see many different points of view.
• Strong listening skills.
• Enthusiastic about the NICU’s mission of excellence in patient care and safety.
• Ability to share both positive and negative experiences in a constructive way.

Commitment Requirements

The time commitment varies throughout the year and is based on the member’s interest. At minimum, the Council meets monthly, on the first Wednesday of each month from 7 – 9 p.m. Dinner is provided. In addition, there are opportunities to work on subcommittees, speak at various NICU functions, and volunteer in the unit. A two-year commitment is requested, with the option of a third year if desired.
