Discontinuing an Infusion at Home

This video provides a step-by-step guide on how to discontinue an infusion at home.

The process involves several key steps:

  • Cleaning your work surface.
  • Stopping the infusion pump.
  • Washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Gathering and setting up supplies on a clean surface, emphasizing that each item is single-use and should be discarded if it touches anything other than the line.
  • Washing or sanitizing hands again.
  • Disconnecting the infusion tubing from the central line.
  • Disinfecting the injection cap of the child's central line using the provided disinfectant.
  • Attaching and flushing the saline syringe.
  • Determining if Heparin is required. Your healthcare provider will inform you if it's necessary.
    • If Heparin is not required, place a new disinfectant cap on the clear cap.
    • If Heparin is required, clean the end of the cap, then attach and flush the Heparin syringe.
  • Clamping the central line.
  • Placing a disinfectant cap on the clear cap until the central line is needed again.

Always contact your healthcare provider if you have any questions.
