Setting Up an Infusion at Home

This video provides a step-by-step guide on how to set up an infusion at home, emphasizing cleanliness and proper technique. If you have any questions, please contact your healthcare provider.

Here's a summary of the key steps:

  • Clean your work surface.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Ensure to clean between fingers, under fingernails, and up to your wrists.
  • Gather and open your supplies. Remember, each item is for single use, and if it touches anything besides the line once opened, it must be discarded.
  • Wash or sanitize hands again.
  • Clean the end of the cap on the line. Remove the disinfectant cap and discard it, but keep the clear cap on at all times. Disinfect the cap using the provided wipe, scrubbing for 15 seconds and allowing it to dry for 15 seconds if using alcohol wipes.
  • Attach and flush saline. Push and twist the saline syringe onto the cap and unclamp the line. Pulse flush the entire saline syringe.
  • Disconnect the saline syringe by holding the clear cap firmly and untwisting it, then discard the syringe.
  • Clean the end of the cap again using a disinfectant wipe.
  • Attach the infusion tubing to the clear injection cap and unclamp the line.
  • Start your infusion pump as instructed by your home health nurse.
