Bio
Alexander Ellis, MD, a native Virginian who grew up in Richmond, earned a bachelor's degree in ecology and evolutionary biology from Princeton University, and then spent two years working in the rainforests in Panama researching tropical forest ecology while pursuing a Master's of Science in biology from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.
He returned home to Richmond for his medical training at Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. His postgraduate training was completed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston where he was a Resident in Internal Medicine & Pediatrics (Med/Peds) followed by a Fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology.
Dr. Ellis performed several months of additional post-fellowship training in adult congenital heart disease with Dr. Gary Webb at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Dr. Ellis established the Adult Congenital Heart Disease program when he arrived at CHKD in 2007 and it has now grown to follow >650 individual ACHD patients per year. He is one of only three Adult Congenital Heart Disease board-certified cardiologists in Hampton Roads, with practice partner Dr. Ashish Saini. There are currently fewer than 500 board-certified ACHD physicians in the country.
Outside of medicine, he is a former Division I collegiate distance runner, and is an avid cyclist and swimmer. He enjoys spending time on the water, especially boating, paddleboarding, and kayaking on the Lynnhaven and Chesapeake Bay. He is an amateur photographer and enjoys travel and spending time with his wife and two children.
