Youth Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (YSBIRT) at CHKD

YSBIRT is a nationally recognized, evidence-based model designed to identify, intervene early, and connect youth ages 12–21 to appropriate behavioral health and substance use services.

Why It Matters

  • 9 out of 10 adults with substance use disorders began using before age 18.
  • The emergency department is often the first and only point of contact for at-risk youth.
  • Early identification can redirect the trajectory of a young person’s life.

How It Works at CHKD

  • Youth presenting in the ED are screened.
  • Screenings help determine risk level (low, moderate, or high).
  • Trained intervention specialists deliver brief interventions using motivational interviewing.
  • If needed, youth are referred to trusted treatment providers in the community.

This initiative is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and administered through the University of Baltimore.
