Sitting still. Paying attention. Finishing tasks.

Skills like these may be hard for a child who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. ADHD is a chronic condition of the brain and can make it challenging for kids to control their behavior. In some cases, children may struggle to socialize with others and experience difficulties in school.

If you think your child might have ADHD, it is important to discuss your concerns with your child’s pediatrician. Every child is different, but some benefit by taking medication prescribed for ADHD or therapy to help with coping mechanisms. The earlier you consult with your child’s pediatrician, the more likely you’ll be to prevent associated problems, such as poor grades and low self-esteem.

Here are five ways parents and caregivers can help a child manage ADHD.

1.) Establish Routines, Organization

Children with ADHD are most successful in a structured environment. Establish regular times for meals, homework, play, and bedtime. Lay out your child’s clothes and make sure school bags and lunches are packed ahead of the morning rush to help things run smoothly.

Consider using clocks and timers to keep your child on task. Calendars, lists, and planners can be helpful as well. Keep your home neat and organized. Children with ADHD thrive in this type of environment.

2.) Encourage Exercise and Healthy Sleep Habits

All kids need daily exercise. Regular physical activity can have a positive effect on your child’s mood and their ability to focus. Engaging in regular exercise can also promote a restful night’s sleep. Set a consistent, early bedtime routine. School age kids (6-13 years) need 6-13 hours of sleep, and teens need 8-10 hours each night. Help your child get the best possible sleep by decreasing screen time in the evening. Spend time cuddling or reading together before bedtime to help build a sense of security. Some children sleep better with a bit of background noise, such as the sound of a ceiling fan or a recording of rain.

3.) Use Praise to Reward Behavior

Ensure that you establish consistent rules at home that your child can understand and follow. Reward and praise your child for their good behavior. Positive reinforcement is a great way to motivate kids!

4.) Establish Healthy Eating Habits

What your child eats can greatly affect how they think and feel. Ensure each meal and snack is packed with essential nutrients. Avoid sugary snacks or beverages.

5.) Take Care of Yourself

As your child’s role model, it is important to take care of yourself. Parenting can be challenging at times, and it is essential to seek help when needed. Make sure you are eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and finding ways to manage stress.

Although there is no known cure for ADHD, there are effective treatment options to help kids live happy, healthy lives. If your child has ADHD, your pediatrician will work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to their individual needs.
