Vacation Ready: First Aid Kit Essentials

Woman preparing emergency bag at home

By Melanie J. Wilhelm, DNP, Pediatric Specialists

One of our most fun family vacation memories was of our family hiking in the mountains. Suddenly and without warning, we found ourselves thoroughly lost. We somehow got off on a trail that led to a dead end (cliff). It was getting late, and it started raining. With two kids in tow, I feared the worst. I looked to my husband for reassurance. He was stoic, but I could tell he too was concerned. We checked our backpack for supplies. One apple and a half bottle of water: definitely not enough for a family of four. We had zero emergency supplies. It was getting cooler, and the sun was setting. I did not want to spend the night on that mountain (wet, cold, and scared). Thankfully we heard other hikers talking in the distance and headed that way which led us back to the correct path and eventually into a hotel where we ate dinner like we had never seen food before. Although no one was hurt, this little adventure taught me one thing: best to be prepared!

Family vacations are all about fun and adventure, but bumps, bug bites, and sunburn can happen. Whether you are headed to the beach, navigating theme park crowds, or hiking a trail, make sure you pack a first aid kit.

Here is a quick guide to building a travel-friendly first aid kit for the whole family.

First Aid Basics

These supplies help treat cuts, scrapes, and minor mishaps:

  • Adhesive bandages (variety of sizes)
  • Sterile gauze pads
  • Medical tape
  • Elastic bandage wrap
  • A splint
  • Antiseptic wipes or rubbing alcohol
  • Antibiotic ointment (e.g., Neosporin)
  • Tweezers
  • Small scissors
  • Disposable gloves
  • Safety pins
  • Soap

Medications to Pack

Be ready for fevers, allergies, or upset stomachs:

  • Children’s and adult pain relievers (acetaminophen or ibuprofen)
  • Antihistamines (for allergies or bites)
  • Motion sickness or anti-nausea medicine
  • Antacids
  • Hydrocortisone cream
  • Prescription medications (in labeled containers)

Travel-Specific Must Haves

Traveling brings unique challenges. Be prepared with:

  • Sunscreen broad-spectrum (SPF 15+)
  • Aloe vera gel or after-sun lotion
  • Insect repellent or wipes
  • Calamine lotion
  • Digital thermometer
  • Instant cold packs
  • Eye drops or saline rinse.
  • Eye shield

Kid-Friendly Extras

Little ones need a little extra comfort:

  • Fun, themed bandages (dinosaurs, unicorns, etc.)
  • Stickers or lollipops for distraction
  • Small toy or fidget to ease anxiety.
  • Medication syringe or measured cup.

Do not Forget These!

These often-overlooked items can be lifesavers:

  • Small first aid guide or quick-reference card
  • Flashlight with batteries.
  • Emergency contact list (including pediatrician)
  • Travel insurance details.
  • Copies of prescriptions
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Face masks
  • Mouthpiece for giving CPR (available from the Red Cross)

First Aid Kit Tips

  • Use a bright, zippered pouch or organizer so it is easy to spot in your luggage.
  • Store medications in a cool, dry place (not in the car!).
  • Store out of the reach of children.
  • Restock and check expiration dates before every trip.
  • Pack daily medications in your carry-on bag if you are flying.

A little preparation goes a long way. With the right supplies, you will be ready for whatever your family adventure brings, so you can focus on what family vacations are all about: making memories and having fun!
