CHKD Clinical Pharmacist Receives International Honor for Advancing Patient Care and Advocacy
NORFOLK, Va. – Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) is proud to announce that Amanda Cavness, PharmD, a clinical pharmacist specialist in Hematology/Oncology, has received the 2026 Olivier Bugnon Award from the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP).
Presented Aug. 30 during the FIP World Congress in Montreal, the award recognizes an outstanding pharmacist who has made significant contributions to pharmacy practice at an international level. Named in honor of Prof. Olivier Bugnon, a respected global leader in pharmacy practice and education, the award celebrates individuals whose work advances patient-centered care and the role of pharmacists in improving health outcomes.
At CHKD, Dr. Cavness serves patients in the Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, where she works closely with physicians, nurses, patients, and families to optimize medication therapy and help ensure children with complex hematologic and oncologic conditions receive the highest quality care.
"I’m so honored to receive this award," Dr. Cavness said. "Dr. Olivier Bugnon was a pharmacy leader renowned for his patient-centered focus and advancing pharmacists’ roles in direct patient care. I try to mirror this commitment in my role in the Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center by working one-on-one with my patients to elevate the interprofessional care they receive and help overcome the many barriers to high-quality medication therapy.
"Outside of CHKD, I advocate for increased awareness, research, and support for patients living with sickle cell disease," Dr. Cavness said. "The patients are the reason I chose this career."
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Cavness is recognized for her advocacy efforts to improve awareness, treatment, and support for children and families affected by sickle cell disease and other complex blood disorders.
The International Pharmaceutical Federation represents more than 5.5 million pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, and pharmacy educators through 160 member organizations worldwide and has maintained official relations with the World Health Organization since 1948.
