NORFOLK, Va. – United Way of Virginia’s Eastern Shore has donated $5,000 to CHKD’s Mobile Intensive Care Program, which transports critically ill and injured children from other hospitals to Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters for lifesaving care.
The CHKD Mobile Intensive Care team, made up of a registered nurse, respiratory therapist, and paramedic, begins treatment right away using specialized, child-specific equipment. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the team transfers pediatric patients to CHKD in specially designed mobile intensive care unit ambulances.
The program allows community hospitals to refer children to CHKD when they need a higher level of pediatric care. CHKD’s Mobile Intensive Care team is also the only one in the Hampton Roads region equipped to transport premature newborns with life-threatening conditions, illnesses, or injuries.
