Changing a Central Line Dressing at Home

This video provides a detailed guide on how to change a central line dressing at home. If you have any questions, please contact your healthcare provider.

Here are the key steps:

  • Prepare your workspace: Clean your work surface and wash your hands thoroughly for 20 seconds with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Gather supplies and set up: Gather all necessary supplies, put on a face mask for yourself and anyone nearby, and wash/sanitize your hands again. Carefully open and drop all supplies onto a clean, sterile field.
  • Remove the old dressing: Use adhesive remover to loosen the old dressing, then carefully pull the dressing towards the insertion site, avoiding contact with the site itself.
  • Disinfect the area: Wash or sanitize your hands again, then put on sterile gloves. Set up your sterile field and prepare your items. Disinfect the central line and the surrounding area.
    • For CHG, disinfect for 30 seconds and allow to dry completely.
    • For CHG allergy, use an alcohol swab followed by a Betadine swab. Clean with alcohol using circular motions from the insertion site outwards with three separate swabs, allowing to dry for at least 60 seconds. Then, repeat the process with three separate Betadine swabs, allowing to dry for three to five minutes.
  • Apply new dressing components: If a stabilization device is used, replace it. Apply an antiseptic disc with the blue side facing up. Apply mastisol to a half-inch border around the insertion site, allowing it to dry for 20 to 30 seconds.
  • Apply the new dressing: Cover the insertion site with the new dressing and reinforce it as needed, especially if using a stabilization device.
  • Final steps: Label the dressing with the current date and time, then remove your gloves and wash your hands.
