Setting Up a Sterile Field at Home

This video provides a step-by-step guide on how to set up a sterile field at home. If you have any questions, please contact your healthcare provider.

Here's a summary of the key steps:

  • Clean your work surface.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, making sure to clean between fingers, under fingernails, and up to your wrists.
  • Gather your supplies.
  • Put on a face mask for yourself and anyone within six feet of the central line.
  • Wash or sanitize your hands again.
  • Open and set up your supplies on a sterile work surface. Carefully drop all items onto your sterile field; discard and get a new one if any item touches anything outside the sterile field.
  • Wash or sanitize your hands before putting on sterile gloves.
  • Put on sterile gloves: grasp the inner part of the glove for your dominant hand with your non-dominant hand. For your non-dominant hand, grasp the cuff of the glove with your gloved dominant hand. Do not touch any area outside the sterile field after your gloves are on; if another area is touched, remove and replace with new sterile gloves.
  • Prepare the items on your sterile field, ensuring they do not touch an area outside the sterile field.
