Personal Statement
What brought me to CHKD was the people. During my training, I saw firsthand how dedicated every member of the team is to providing exceptional care for children and supporting families. I knew it was the kind of environment where I wanted to practice medicine.
Bio
Born in Chicago and raised in the Atlanta area, Dr. Faysal Akbik earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his pediatric residency in Norfolk, where he also served as a pediatric hospitalist before pursuing fellowship training in neonatology. Returning to Hampton Roads and CHKD feels like coming home.
Drawn to medicine by its blend of science, teamwork, and the opportunity to support families during life's most meaningful moments, Dr. Akbik found neonatology to be a natural fit. He enjoys caring for critically ill newborns while partnering closely with parents through both the challenges and celebrations of their baby's NICU journey. His clinical interests include the care of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and neonatal resuscitation. His academic interests focus on quality improvement, reducing health disparities, and advancing evidence-based care for newborns.
Having trained at CHKD earlier in his career, Dr. Akbik experienced firsthand the organization's commitment to children and families, as well as the collaborative culture among its physicians and staff. With strong family roots in Hampton Roads, he is proud to serve the community that helped shape his training and career.
Outside of the NICU, Dr. Akbik enjoys spending time with family and friends. His hobbies include cooking, baking, photography, playing guitar, and designing and 3D printing creative projects. He believes curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning help him become a better physician for the children and families he serves.
