Why is nutrition important in CF?

Adequate intake of calories, protein, salt, fat, and fat-soluble vitamins is crucial for lung growth and overall health for people living with cystic fibrosis (CF). This can be a struggle for most because of CF’s effect on the pancreas and GI tract. Most people need pancreatic enzymes to help digest fat and protein and require close follow up with a dietitian as food intake changes from infancy to adulthood. Enzymes are matched to fat intake, weight changes, and meal and snack patterns. Specialized CF vitamins are also recommended to ensure that fat-soluble vitamin intake is sufficient.

What does the CF diet consist of?

Because fat and other nutrients are not easily absorbed and there is an excess of salt loss through the skin, the diet is high in calories, fats, and salt as compared to general population guidelines. Nutritional needs change as new treatments become available. Now more than ever, you or your child's CF nutrition prescription needs to be individualized and assessed by a dietitian.

What else should I know about CF nutrition?

Proper bone health can be a concern for many people with CF, as can CF-related diabetes. Your dietitian will work with our Gastroenterology and Endocrinology team to give you or your child continuity of care.
