Frequently Asked Questions

What are the qualifications of your urgent care staff members?

Providers specially trained in pediatrics, will care for your child.

What insurance do you accept?

CHKD Urgent Care accepts all major insurance plans, including Tricare and Medicaid.

How long will I have to wait?

You may reserve your time to be seen. Walk-in patients are seen on a first-come, first-served basis, and depending on the severity of their illness or injury. The number of patients coming to our urgent care center varies. We will do our best to see your child as soon as possible. Keep in mind, some children may need to be seen immediately and transferred to our emergency department while others may be waiting for lab tests or X-rays. Not everyone in the waiting room will be waiting to see an urgent care provider.

Does CHKD Urgent Care test for RSV?

At this time, urgent care does not offer testing for RSV.

Does CHKD Urgent Care offer flu shots?

At this time, urgent care does not offer flu shots.

What if my child needs a physical?

We do not offer routine school, camp, or athletic physicals. Please contact your primary care physician to schedule an appointment.

What if my child needs a lab test or an X-ray?

If your child’s pediatrician ordered lab or radiology tests, we offer on-site lab and radiology services. Test results will be shared with your child’s CHKD pediatrician and will also be available on the MyCHKD patient portal. If you do not have a MyCHKD account, please visit your  provider for registration information.

If your child’s pediatrician ordered lab tests or an X-ray, you may also visit any of the following CHKD health centers:

What if my child needs to see a specialist?

If your child is seriously ill or injured and our urgent care provider thinks your child needs to see a specialist that day, your child will be referred to the emergency department at our main hospital.

What if my child needs stitches?

We stitch most cuts. For more serious injuries, our urgent care providers can advise on whether or not your child's laceration would be best handled in the emergency department at our main hospital.

What if my child has a broken bone?

We can diagnose and splint most fractures, but do not have an orthopedic surgeon on staff at the urgent care center. Simple fractures will be splinted. Once the swelling decreases, your child will need to see one of our orthopedic surgeons in a few days for a cast. Our staff will inform you how to arrange a follow-up appointment with one of our orthopedic surgeons.

What if I cannot get to the urgent care center before it closes?

If you cannot make it during our open hours, please take your child to our emergency department at the main hospital.
