Breastfeeding, or providing mom's own expressed milk, can help you give your baby the best possible start in life. Studies have documented the many benefits breastfeeding offers for mother and baby. To help our breastfeeding patients, CHKD provides lactation support to mothers of hospitalized infants.
Lactation support is available through the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and is provided by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) who have received training and international certification in breastfeeding and human lactation. The goal of our lactation consultants is to support, promote and encourage breastfeeding through education, research, and personal support.
When a breastfeeding baby or child is admitted to the hospital, lactation support services can be accessed by a physician or a registered nurse placing an order for a lactation consult.
