Neuromuscular Scoliosis

About Neuromuscular Scoliosis

Neuromuscular Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine caused by the spinal cord, brain, and/or muscular system. These curves are more likely to progress even in to adulthood. Children with this condition may not have any pain and may experience issues with poor balance and coordination when moving around.

Evaluation

Your specialist may order a variety of studies to evaluate your child’s spine. These tests may include X-rays, MRI, or CT scans. Your specialist may also send you to the laboratory for blood work to include to have your child’s level of Vitamin D checked.

Once your child’s tests are complete, your specialist will review the plan of care for your child. Additionally, your child may require a multidisciplinary team that may include pulmonary, cardiac, nutrition and general surgery to prepare a treatment plan.

Treatment

Bracing can be an option for smaller curves. For non-ambulatory patients, wheelchair modifications can be beneficial for posturing support.

Some patients can benefit from physical therapy. Some patients will require surgical intervention to correct their scoliosis with a posterior spinal fusion.

The goals for these patients are to prevent further progression of their curve, prevent skin problems, and improve sitting balance.

If your specialist has recommended your child will need to have a surgery you will need to schedule your child for the pre-operative spinal fusion class.
