Spine Program DNV Certification-Callout-CHKD

Spine Program Awarded DNV Advanced Pediatric Spine Certification

CHKD’s Spine Program is the first in the nation to be awarded DNV Advanced Pediatric Spine Certification! This certification designates that our facilities and services meet the standards of care in the complex specialty of spine surgery.

Refer to Our Scoliosis and Spine Program

CHKD's Scoliosis and Spine Program provides care for patients from birth to age 21. No testing or referrals are needed before the first appointment.

Why Choose CHKD's Scoliosis and Spine Program?

At CHKD we provide a comprehensive team approach when caring for your child and have a dedicated team to provide your child with the best care available.  Our physicians are specially trained and highly skilled in treating patients with scoliosis including bracing and performing spinal fusion.

For our patients that will need a spinal fusion, we have established an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols that prevent infections, decrease blood loss, and improve the post-operative experience with less post-operative pain and quicker return to regular activity.  We also have a registered nurse that serves as the program coordinator dedicated to guiding our families throughout the surgical process.

Advanced Diagnostic Capabilities

EOS Imaging Technology

The EOS imaging system is a groundbreaking X-ray system that substantially reduces the amount of radiation received during a single imaging procedure. Providing detailed, high-quality skeletal images, the EOS imaging system has the unique ability to provide a three-dimensional, full-body image of a patient in a natural standing position with a single scan.

EOS imaging is primarily used to assess patients with spine, hip, and leg disorders, such as scoliosis and leg-length discrepancies. For children and teens who require frequent scans, such as those with chronic or progressive skeletal conditions like scoliosis, EOS can effectively replace regular X-rays if efforts to reduce any risks associated with radiation exposure over time. Traditional X-rays are still the standard of care for injuries or conditions that can be evaluated with general radiography, such as broken bones and sports injuries.

CHKD offers EOS imaging at two locations in Hampton Roads, the CHKD Health Center at Oakbrooke in Chesapeake, and the CHKD Health and Surgery Center at Oyster Point in Newport News.

7D Surgical Navigation

Available at CHKD for select posterior spinal fusion surgeries, 7D uses FLASH navigation system to provide fast, effective, radiation-free imaging for the duration of the procedure to verify anatomical landmarks for accuracy and hardware placement.

Pediatric Spine Study Group (PSSG)

CHKD’s Spine Program is a proud participant in Pediatric Spine Study Group (PSSG) which is an international research group that collaborates to study real-world data in a diverse pediatric patient population.

Surgical and Non-Surgical Treatment Options Available

Scoliosis Growth Rod Surgery

Growth rod surgery may be recommended when bracing or casting is unable to stop the progression of the curvature of the spine.

 Casting

CHKD offers a noninvasive casting procedure for younger patients with early onset scoliosis.

Scoliosis Bracing

Your spine specialist may recommend scoliosis bracing. The child's age, type and location of the curvature, and the amount of growth that remians are considered when making this decision.

Spinal Fusion Surgery

Either posterior spinal fusion surgery or anterior spinal fusion surgery is recommended when bracing or casting has been unable to stop the progression of the curve.

Physical Therapy

In addition to standard physical therapy care, several of our physical therapists are certified in The Schroth Method for treatment of scoliosis.

Patient Family Advisory Council

The Scoliosis and Spine Program at CHKD has developed a Patient Family Advisory Council, which works closely with our care team to improve the overall patient and family experience. Email us to learn more about becoming a part of our PFAC.
