With the many challenges that come from growing up in today’s world, many kids and teens are rolling out their yoga mats to help eliminate stress from their lives.
Yoga, an exercise practice that combines moving your body through different poses while incorporating specific breathing techniques, has become increasing popular among U.S. children. Studies have shown that yoga can reduce feelings of anxiety and stress while boosting self-confidence, concentration, and physical endurance.
Practicing yoga regularly can have a positive impact on a child’s overall well-being. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends yoga as a safe and effective way for children to cope with emotional, physical, and behavioral health conditions.
With pressures at home, at school, online, and on the field, many children need a way to relieve stress and reduce tension. Yoga can teach kids how to slow down, take a deep breath, and practice mindfulness.
Other health benefits of yoga include:
- Enhanced flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness.
- Improved concentration, calmness, and relaxation.
Children with special needs can also benefit from practicing yoga, as it helps relieve tension and rigid muscle tone and can stimulate the digestive system and relieve constipation. Other physical benefits include regulating levels of blood sugar, insulin, and hormones; decreased stomach pain in children diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome; and improved balance.
Life challenges can certainly test our limits, but yoga can help. Consider practicing yoga with your children. Many yoga teachers post family friendly routines on YouTube. Or add a simple yoga pose or two with some basic breathing techniques to your daily routine to reduce stress and effectively take on everyday challenges.
