NORFOLK, Va., June 16, 2026 — Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters announced today that philanthropist Kay Abiouness has committed $1 million to establish The Kay Abiouness Endowment Fund for Clinical Operations, providing enduring support for pediatric care across the CHKD Health System.

The announcement also marks the first named position at CHKD, the Kay Abiouness Distinguished Chief of Clinical Operations, honoring Dr. Christopher Foley, CHKD’s Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Operations Officer. The named position recognizes distinguished leadership in advancing the highest standards of care for children and families throughout the region.

“Kay has made CHKD her life’s work, and her philanthropy has touched our organization in transformational ways,” said Amy Sampson, President and CEO of CHKD. “We are deeply grateful for Kay’s extraordinary generosity, and we are proud to recognize Dr. Christopher Foley as the first Kay Abiouness Distinguished Chief of Clinical Operations. Both Kay and Dr. Foley exemplify the commitment, compassion, and leadership that define CHKD at its best.”A lifelong King’s Daughter and Norfolk resident, Abiouness has supported CHKD in countless ways over the years, including significant investments Amy Sampson in the health system’s mental health initiatives and other critical priorities. Her latest gift reflects a deep and enduring belief in CHKD’s mission and in the importance of sustaining exceptional pediatric care for future generations.

Dr. Foley has served CHKD for nearly three decades and currently oversees patient care across the health system, including the hospital, outpatient services, and physician practices. During his tenure, he has held leadership positions such as CHKD’s chief medical officer and as medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit, pharmacy, and critical care transport.

“Dr. Foley is held in the highest regard by patients, families, clinicians and team members alike,” Sampson said. “I can think of no one more deserving as a clinician and colleague to be associated with the legacy of Kay Abiouness.”
