“It is a privilege to have my unique story woven into the tapestry of America, a tapestry that encompasses diverse backgrounds, experiences, and dreams.”
Just days before Independence Day, CHKD pediatrician Dr. Lillian Nalwoga took an Oath of Allegiance to become an American citizen.
Dr. Nalwoga’s journey began in the Pearl of Africa, her homeland of Uganda. It was there that she laid the foundation of her career in medicine, learning from dedicated Ugandan and American doctors who inspired her with their knowledge and passion. She continued her journey, spending nearly a decade in Lesotho (another African nation), working alongside doctors from the United States and witnessing firsthand the positive impact they made in the world.
Driven by her desire to make a difference, Dr. Nalwoga set her sights on becoming a board-certified pediatrician in the U.S. The pursuit of this dream led her to CHKD, where every day she says she has had “the privilege of witnessing the bright faces of children in this region, filled with hope and potential. It is a joy and honor to be part of their journey, helping to nurture their aspirations of becoming future doctors, nurses, scientists, artists, teachers, and much more.”
For Dr. Nalwoga, the U.S. has provided a fertile ground to grow and achieve her dreams, including becoming a pediatrician.
“Becoming a citizen of this great nation was more than a formality to me,” she said. “it represents a profound commitment, a heartfelt dedication to this country, its ideals and its future - Our Future! It is a privilege to have my unique story woven into the tapestry of America, a tapestry that encompasses diverse backgrounds, experiences, and dreams.
While my roots remain African, the cradle of humankind, I am today proudly American! And I hope to make a positive impact both here in Hampton Roads and abroad, just like those Americans I first encountered as a young medical student in Uganda.”
Dr. Nalwoga is a practicing pediatrician at General Academic Pediatrics, a part of CHKD Medical Group. She earned her medical degree from Mbarara University of Science & Technology in Uganda and completed her pediatric residency training here at CHKD.
Additionally, Dr. Nalwoga holds a master's degree in public health from the University of London, rounding out an academic profile that spans three continents.
When she’s not working, Dr. Nalwoga enjoys spending time with family, finding new adventures at home and abroad, and has a love of snow skiing and snorkeling.
Congratulations on your citizenship, Dr. Nalwoga! You are an inspiration to aspiring young healthcare professionals here in Hampton Roads and across the globe.
