Personal Statement

Being able to care for pediatric patients at CHKD is truly a blessing. As a revered pillar of the Greater Norfolk area, it is clear that CHKD is committed to ensuring that all children, regardless of their background, are cared for with the highest regard.

Bio

Dr. Mark Fleming II joined CHKD’s pediatric surgery team in October 2026. Born and raised in the twin-island federation of St. Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean, he moved to the United States in 2008 to pursue his college and medical education. He completed his general surgery training at the University of Virginia Health followed by a two-year pediatric surgery fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital.

His interest in medicine was inspired by his childhood pediatrician in St. Kitts, who demonstrated the importance of providing compassionate, human-centered care to every patient. Growing up in a large family surrounded by children of all ages also shaped his path. From an early age, Dr. Fleming has always enjoyed caring for children and supporting their development.

Dr. Fleming’s clinical interests span pediatric and neonatal surgery, with a particular interest in minimally invasive and robotic approaches when appropriate. His areas of focus include conditions of the aerodigestive system, such as esophageal atresia and tracheomalacia, as well as neonatal anomalies, hepatobiliary disease, inflammatory bowel disease, anorectal malformations, and Hirschsprung’s disease.

Dr. Fleming and his wife wanted to raise their children closer to family in Virginia and welcomed the opportunity to join CHKD, where they immediately felt at home.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Fleming enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, playing basketball, weightlifting, and exploring new cultures through international travel. He also enjoys concerts, comedy shows, and slam poetry.
