Personal Statement
What makes CHKD special is its combination of exceptional family-centered care, a close-knit culture, and a commitment to training compassionate physicians who will make a meaningful impact in Hampton Roads and beyond. I am honored to return to the place that helped shape me as a physician and to contribute to that mission.
Bio
Dr. Mendez is originally from New York but grew up along Florida’s Gulf Coast. With both of his parents working as pediatric subspecialists, he saw from an early age the positive impact physicians can have on children, their families, and the broader community. Those experiences inspired his own interest in pediatrics.
Dr. Mendez earned his Master of Public Health from the University of Florida (Go Gators!). He later completed his pediatric residency at CHKD. While exploring different career paths during residency, he spent time with the Division of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and quickly fell in love with the specialty. After completing his fellowship training at the University of South Florida at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, he is grateful for the opportunity to return to CHKD and join the division that sparked his passion for allergy and immunology.
Dr. Mendez cares for children with a wide range of allergic conditions, including asthma, environmental and food allergies, eczema, urticaria (hives), drug allergies, and insect allergies. He is also interested in the diagnosis and management of inborn errors of immunity, including antibody deficiencies and immune dysregulation. He values patient and family education, collaborative multispecialty care, and building long-term relationships with the children and families he serves.
Outside of work, Dr. Mendez enjoys long-distance running, hiking, cooking and baking, video games, traveling, and spending quality time with his wife and their Maltese.
